Hearing God: Dreams, Visions, and the Still Small Voice

God speaks—He always has and always will. From the beginning, He has reached out to His people through dramatic dreams and visions as well as the quiet whispers of His Spirit, all with one goal: drawing us closer to Him.

Revelation Is About Relationship

Joel 2:28 reminds us that in these last days, God’s Spirit is poured out on everyone who seeks Him. Yet, this outpouring isn’t solely about experiencing dreams or prophecy—it’s about deep communion with the living God. While Scripture shows us God using dreams (like Joseph’s) and visions (like Daniel’s and Peter’s) for guidance, these supernatural tools are meant to point us toward an ongoing intimacy with Him. The true blessing is not in the dream, but in knowing the Giver

.

Listening Beyond the Noise

Though God sometimes speaks through grand gestures, He often communicates in the stillness. Elijah expected to hear God in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but instead, God spoke in a “still small voice” (1 Kings 19:11–12). Developing quiet hearts through prayer, studying His Word, and embracing moments of silence helps us discern His gentle guidance—even when He seems silent. Trusting Him in the waiting is just as important as recognizing dramatic revelations.

Discerning His Voice

Not every dream, vision, or prophesy we encounter (our own or otherwise) is from God, which is why Scripture urges us to test everything (1 John 4:1). True revelation will never contradict God’s Word and will always lead us closer to Christ. Instead of chasing after supernatural experiences, we’re called to humbly ask for wisdom (James 1:5) and focus on truly knowing Him.
